The great white pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) is the rarest of the two pelican species found in Greece. About 700 individuals are seen in the country, and they only breed in lake Mikri Prespa on the northern borders of Greece. They are threatened due to human disturbance of their nesting colonies and foraging sites.
The Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus) is the largest pelican species in the world and the largest freshwater bird. In Greece around 3,500 individuals have been recorded in 16 different wetlands. The Dalmatian pelican breeds in Lake Mikri Prespa, which hosts the largest colony of this species in the world. It also breeds in the Amvrakikos Lagoon and in Lake Kirkini.
