The Most Venomous Animal in the World
The family Conidae includes 800 species of sea snail. All snails in this family have a characteristic conical shell, adorned with a kaleidoscope of colours and patterns. These are sophisticated predators, which immobilize their prey using a specialized tooth and a venom gland that contains neurotoxins. The snail ejects the tooth like a harpoon, so fast that it cannot be seen by the human eye. The species Conus marmoreus, that is found in the Indian Ocean, has venom that can kill a human in only four minutes. It is considered the most venomous animal on Earth, as only 0.001-0.003 mg of venom per kilogram of body weight is needed to kill a human.
