Black Francolin

Francolinus francolinus

They are medium-sized birds with a body length of up to 34 cm. In τhe males the head and underside of the body is black. They also have a brown collar, a broad white spot on the face and bright white spots at the sides of the chest. The female is brown with dark speckles. It is found in areas of shrub-land, grassland or farmland, if the crops are tall enough to provide cover. Its distribution covers Asia Minor, the Middle East and India. They breed between March and May, usually in areas of tall grass or scrubland. The species existed until the beginning of the 20th century in Greece.
